Cancer Prevention

We cannot keep ourselves from ever having cancer, but we can cut our risk factors by making lifestyle changes. Many of these changes are difficulty, but they can make a difference between life and death.

The first lifestyle change is to stop smoking. We’ve all read about the dangers of smoking for decades, but people still smoke. In fact people start smoking for the first time every day. Teenagers and young people think smoking is cool or a nerve suppressant. More and more women smoke. Women are getting lung cancer at a rate very close to men because more and more women are becoming smokers. Some women say that smoking helps them to lose weight. Yeah, the risk of smoking is so much easier to take than a few pounds.

Movies constantly show movie stars smoking and looking cool, Personally, I think they look anything but cool. Remember these are called cancer sticks. Anyway, promoting smoking in movies seems to be epidemic. Everyone knows that changing from a smoker to a non-smoker cuts your risk of cancer almost immediately.

People are more inactive than ever before. Our ancestors worked hard and were very active. Add a poor diet of fatty foods and other unhealthy meals and you heighten your risk of cancer.

Years ago, when we became sun worshipers, incidences of sun cancer began to rise. Especially early exposure to sun raises the risk of sun cancer. Babies under the age of six month should have little to no exposure. Sunburns are especially dangerous. The earlier the sunburn, the higher the risk. People who keep year round tans risk getting sun cancer some time in their lives. If you must get out in the sun, use really good sunscreens and avoid the peak sun hours. You can also wear clothing that will cover particularly vulnerable areas. If you must get out in the sun, do a monthly body check to make sure you have no suspicious lesions. If you suspect any mole, don’t wait, go to the doctor.

Where we work may also be a factor. Do you know whether or not your place of work is free of asbestos? If you aren’t sure, ask for paperwork if the building is quite old. If you work near dangerous chemicals, be sure to always use safety gear. Prevent as much .exposure as possible. If none of these precautions are impossible, you might want to change your workplace.

Lifestyle changes may prevent or at least lesson your risk of cancer. If these changes seem too difficult, visit a cancer ward in a hospital. You might be ‘scared straight.
